Did you know that Harmonia was the first Greco-Roman deity to marry? Daughter of Aphrodite and Ares, she is remembered for her love affair with Cadmus. It was love at first sight, sealed in a marriage with all the deities present!
Like all tragedies in mythology, the ending was dramatic. Dionysus had fallen in love with Harmonia, and out of jealousy he transformed Cadmus into a snake! Only the intervention of Olympus put an end to Harmonia’s pain: after having transformed her into a serpent like her beloved, he gave the couple the gift of eternal love.
The fascination of Greek mythology revolves around the idea of the destiny of men, often intuited by the names of the characters themselves. Is it therefore no coincidence that the first love story in history bears the name of Harmony?
